GRAND OPENING CEREMONY FOR NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN INDIANS
(September 21 - 25, 2004, Washington, D.C.)

Donna Begay and Leona Begay are describing the meaning of the Tubatulabal of Kern Valley banner and tribal efforts to become federally recognize. Other tribal folks were very supportive of our tribal efforts. Some of them comment "the federal recognition process takes too long" and some young children stated ""we recognize you"".
Donna Begay and Leona Begay marched with Tribal Banner. They were in front of the Koniag-KANA tribal folks from Alaska.
The night before traveling, Donna Begay created an "iron-on" lettering and banner. Leona Begay is adding in final touches to the banner - a nice border - hand stitched.

There was a wonderful tribal show called "Spirit". Pictured behind Leona Begay is the show's tent with some great old photos and the Washington Monument in the background.
Tribal Elders were asked to pose in front of the National Capitol. Leona Begay, Tubatulabal, is pictured with other tribal elders. National Geographic was taking the picture.
Grand Opening Ceremony - end of the parade route. U.S Senator Ben Night-Horse Campbell (also a Cheyenne Chief - Colorado) is pictured on the large video screens. He gave a very impressive speech (click here to read his opening remarks for this great event). Ben has completed his term in office and returns to Colorado for retirement in January 2005. Ben supports Tubatulabals of Kern Valley efforts in the federal recognition process. Ben contacted Donna Begay on October 5, 2004 - he would like to keep in contact with Tubatulabal folks and attend CA Indian Days (in Sept. 2005).
Performer Joanne Shenandoah (female with guitar), Carlos Nikai, and Joanne's relatives are performing.
